AFL: There was a bizarre moment late in the third quarter between the Tigers and Demons with the ball hitting a boundary umpire while still in play.
The AFL has OK’d a bizarre moment in the waning stages of the third quarter of last night’s clash between Richmond and Melbourne that resulted in a momentum-swinging goal after the siren.
However, upon closer inspection, Pickett’s kick ricocheted off the lower leg of the adjudicating boundary umpire, causing the ball to remain in-bounds.While the Tigers were able to gain possession, an errant Toby Nankervis kick resulted in a Caleb Windsor mark and post-siren goal to put the Demons ahead by 22 points at the final change.“It looked like it hit the umpire to come back into play ... it couldn’t have come in by itself,” added commentator Brian Taylor.
“We’ve seen cases before where if it’s hit the field umpire, he’ll ball it up,” Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall said. 287-gamer Leigh Montagna added: “What we do know is it was costly in the end — Melbourne was able to retain the footy and get that late goal from Caleb Windsor ... a big, pivotal moment in the game.”Windsor’s goal to cap the quarter was Melbourne’s fifth of the stanza compared to Richmond’s one, with the Demons adding five more majors in the final term to cement“The AFL has ticked off the process its umpires followed here,” Ralph said on Wednesday evening.
