Questions are being raised about what a democratic process means as 14 local government areas in NSW appoint candidates to office without elections because of a lack of nominees.

New candidates and departing councillors are concerned at the lack of people putting their hands up for local government .Fourteen council areas in NSW are appointing candidates to office without elections due to a lack of nominees.

But with fewer than 3,000 voters on the electoral roll, most residents do not feel like they are missing out. "Sometimes don't have a choice or it's not what all the residents would like, and so business owners feel like that would impact their business in a major way," Ms Lea-Barrett said. "I think people are realising our local councils don't have a lot of power, a lot of the decisions that they carry are really decisions made in Sydney or Canberra," Dr Iannuzzi said.
