Northamptonshire had its second wettest February since 1892, according to the Environment Agency

A Northamptonshire council has said that poor weather over the last few months has created a “double whammy” of issues impacting pothole repairs in the county. The government’s environment agency reported just last month that Northamptonshire experienced its second wettest February since 1892, when records first began.

Chief executive of West Northants Council , Anna Earnshaw, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It’s safe to say, and I think it’s true for all areas, the weather that we’ve had is the wettest on record so you’ve got a double whammy with that. That amount of rain saturates the land which means all the rain is on the roads and it’s opening up new potholes and breaking up old potholes as well.

Ms Earnshaw said that a “huge” amount of repairs had still taken place since the end of last year, but that the council will need to wait for a drier patch to tackle some of the worst areas that need total resurfacing, particularly in Daventry. According to recent estimates from a WNC scrutiny committee, it would take up to £250m to completely resurface all of the county’s roads and bring them up to pristine condition.
