Councils want shark nets removed as soon as this summer | Laura_R_Chung
Shark nets would be removed from beaches north of Sydney for the first time in 100 years under a proposal before the NSW government from a Central Coast MP.
“People on the Central Coast love the water, but we are acutely aware that the water is a shark’s natural environment and it’s important we respect that,” Crouch says. “There is that almost a false sense of security the public has about nets and while there is no perfect solution that guarantees public safety, we do have much smarter ways of monitoring shark activity.”
For those who support the nets, they offer psychological comfort, says Dr Vanessa Pirotta, a marine predator researcher at Macquarie University. Perhaps one of the most controversial aspects of shark nets is how many marine animals get caught in the nets. Of the 376 marine animals caught in shark nets the 2021-22 reporting period, only 51 were the target species. The remaining 203 were threatened or protected species, including sharks, turtles and rays. Of these animals, 156 died, data from the NSW Department of Primary Industries shows.
“The NSW government will continue to work with coastal councils to ensure that community preferences are balanced against effective shark mitigation for bathers,” the spokesperson says.
