Actions come as San Diego County's financial picture becomes less certain
County supervisors took a series of steps toward reinventing the region’s mental health care system Tuesday, agreeing to explore significant wage increases for workers and moving forward with a series of facilities upgrades throughout the region.
The board has not been shy in recent years about increasing the amount of money it spends on what it calls behavioral health, with allocations climbing 72 percent from fiscal 2018 to fiscal 2023, reaching nearly $900 million in the current year, according to budget documents. Research work will also dig into what might be done about the long list of operational inefficiencies in local behavioral health processes and procedures that the workforce report indicates sometimes require front-line workers to spend frustrating amounts of time hand-entering duplicate information into uncoordinated computer systems.
Plans have also coalesced around finding low-hanging fruit on the facilities side of the local mental health equation, with the county board giving formal approval to start the planning process for shifting the Psychiatric Hospital of San Diego County from its current role as the region’s safety-net facility for those in critical need of help toward catering to those who need long-term skilled nursing care connected to chronic mental health care needs.
