After telling police officers in his home that 'relationships will obviously have their moments where there's tension', a Tasmanian supreme court judge found himself charged with assault and emotional abuse or intimidation.

Justice Gregory Geason has faced five days of a hearing into allegations he assaulted a woman and subjected her to emotional abuse or intimidation.

The officer continues: there are allegations of tracking a phone, not allowing her to keep in touch with male friends and colleagues, and reading her text messages."Relationships will obviously have their moments where there's tension, but the notion that I would ever be deliberately aggressive or violent … I pleaded with her," he told police.

But the woman, whose identity has been suppressed by the court, said that after a few months, she started to become concerned about some of Justice Geason's behaviour. She said Justice Geason offered to contribute $50,000, and would only provide redacted versions of his finances so she sought independent advice, and was advised against entering into the arrangement."I said I don't want to put up my house as the only collateral for the loan," the woman told the court."There was a lot of yelling again about how I had ruined him … he cursed all women.

They were at Justice Geason's home together, both drinking wine, when she received a text message and photograph from a male colleague and friend. She alleged he went through her messages, offering his own phone to her to do the same, and then through her deleted messages. She continued to message Justice Geason, which she said was her "trying to pretend everything was normal" while she worked out what to do.

The woman's son was in possession of her traceable headphones when he spotted Justice Geason nearby, the court heard. On Friday, Justice Geason took the stand himself, maintaining the emotional abuse and controlling allegations were a surprise to him.X
