Here’s the key news from today’s virus updates from around the country.NSW has reported 20,794 new cases from 96,765 tests, and four more deaths. There are now 1204 people in hospital including 95 in intensive care. These are higher than the figures reported on Sunday: 18,278 cases, 1066 people in hospital and 83 in intensive care.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has backed calls from pharmacists for the tests to be exempted from the goods and services tax, and says they should be free for those who cannot afford them. Foley said international experience showed freely available and readily distributed rapid tests were a “key part” of the pandemic response.Victoria’s COVID-19 response commander, Jeroen Weimar, said there were more COVID-19 cases in the first three days of 2022 than all of 2020.He said the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 was increasing. He said he expected hospitalisations to increase further based on the experience in NSW.

Foley said the level of protection from a booster dose was “critical” for helping the state manage the omicron outbreak. The stockpile includes 12 million at-home tests, and almost 6 million tests for use in the hospital system.
