Hospital patients with COVID-19 have decreased below the 1000 mark but a curve is still expected in a few weeks.

Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Peter Aitken warned Queenslanders to take precautionary measures, including wearing a mask and staying home if unwell to avoid the expected COVID-19 peak of 1660 patients in hospital.

Aitken said the number of COVID-19 patients in Queensland hospitals that dropped just below the 1000 mark was a positive sign. However, Aitken said the modelling, based on two-week-old data, showed there still was a steep curve. “We need to keep making sure that people are getting vaccinated, particularly access to the boosters.

“That prediction, that modelling is 1250 beds in two weeks, and 1660 beds in five weeks doesn’t have to be right. Those accessing antivirals, which became available on July 11, increased to 25 per cent increase in the past week.
