Hospitalisations should be the major parameter to look at when assessing the spread of COVID-19, says Infectious Diseases Physician Professor Peter Collignon.
Prof Collignon said while Victoria and Sydney had high case numbers and hospitalisations last winter, it was still less than 2020 “when there was no vaccination”.
“But equally it was less than the year before when there was no vaccination because at least there was a reasonable amount of people over the age of 60 vaccinated last winter,” he told Sky News Australia. Prof Collignon pointed to England’s ratio of cases to hospitalisations as a reason why COVID vaccinations have proven effective to mitigate the severity of the virus.
“This time, if you look at England again, yes they’ve had a lot of cases but they’re not seeing a major rise in hospitalisation,” he said.
