The city-owned utility will add more natural gas and solar generating capacity to replace...

Fog envelopes Spruce power plants in the early morning during a tour of the J.T. Deely coal-fired power plant run by CPS Energy, on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. The Deely plant will be shut down.CPS Energy trustees on Monday approved a plan to close the utility’s coal operation within the next five years and generate more of the electricity that powers San Antonio from natural gas power plants and solar farms.

The plan’s 4-to-1 approval capped a years-long process to map out San Antonio’s energy future and give the city a better chance to avoid another devastating loss of power like the one it experienced during a deadly winter storm two years ago. CPS staffers, alongside a group of 21 city residents, examined nine different mixes of energy sources — some heavier on wind and solar power, others more reliant on fossil fuels — with the broad goal of finding a way to close CPS Energy’s coal-fired J.K Spruce plant, a major source of air pollution in San Antonio, while ensuring the lights stay on, especially during future spells of extreme hot or cold weather.

“The fact is, San Antonio is ending the use of coal no later than 2028,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said Monday. “I don’t think that’s a statement that we thought we would’ve been making at this point.”
