Rodney and Temecia “Meci” Jackson have seen their newborn daughter three times since the state, in their words, “kidnapped” the seven-day-old. During their...

Three weeks ago, CPS ordered the newborn removed after the DeSoto family took the child, born at home on March 21, for a routine visit with their pediatrician. A physiological jaundice diagnosis, when Mila was 4 days old, needed attention, according to the doctor.

“As of right now, we still don’t have Mila, and Mila needs to be with her parents,” said Temecia Jackson, who had been nursing the child since birth. “She needs to be with her mother. I carried her for 40 weeks for a reason because we’re supposed to be together. We’re still supposed to be together. My body needs her, she needs my body.”

Temecia Jackson said at the April 6 press conference that she feels like this is the reason why such drastic measures were taken. “It’s unusual,” Weaver said. “The timing is very important. The 14-day hearing typically happens without a doubt.” “As a part of the assessment, we FaceTimed, and this time to see how Mila’s eyes and her skin looked, and she was clearing up beautifully,” Edinbyrd said at the press conference in reference to the baby’s jaundice. “Mom sent me three diapers within less than a three- to four-hour period three, blown out, poop diapers. So the bilirubin was leaving her system.”

Treatments for jaundice include phototherapy and more frequent feeding. Hospitals have lights with the exact wavelengths needed for phototherapy. This could be why Bhatt recommended in-patient treatment for the newborn. The next day, the family’s midwife and doctor had a conversation about the situation, and Edinbyrd shared her midwifery credentials, the Jacksons said. After this, the Jacksons assumed the doctor allowed the care to be in the midwife’s hands.

In the removal affidavit, Dr. Bhatt said the father of the child informed him during a phone call that he was against modern medicine and vaccinations. While Bhatt says in the affidavit that he supports alternative approaches, he believed that in this case, the baby should be seen at the hospital.they are not against medicine because they took their newborn to the pediatrician whom they have used for years.

Temecia Jackson said when Mila was born, she instantly saw beauty. Mila looks like her father and is curious about the world around her.
