With a posh British accent and baritone voice, he stamped his authority on every gathering, from kindergarten classes to council meetings governing an institution at the heart of power and privilege in Sydney’s eastern suburbs., for failing disclose allegations against one of his teachers, is a victory for forces in the school community who have opposed the dynamic educator for years.
Cranbrook’s eighth leader, Sampson was hired in 2012. He was, some parents said, an inspiring and effective headmaster with high standards. He offered an educational environment more Parisian than home counties. The International Baccalaureate was introduced at the senior and junior school. Last year, Cranbrook ranked 40th in the state for year 12 results, a strong performance for a non-selective school. GPS neighbour Scots College came 51st.
He wasn’t fully honest with the council either, it said, a body reformed in 2022 under the church-appointed Lovell. The previous, Sampson-sceptical council led by banker Jon North resigned, en masse, following pressure from prominent parents andSampson’s involuntary departure was seen by some Cranbrook parents as a victory for the previous council. “It was payback,” says one.
