Something is rotten in the suburb of Bellevue Hill.
The investment banker North, having served on the council since 2010 and led it since 2020, would well know Cranbrook’s motto Esse quam videri: “To be, rather than to seem to be.” However, his support for co-education has been defined firmly by the latter.
Multiple sources believe North has strongly suggested to Sampson that he resign . Sampson is said to have no plans to leave and has never floated the idea of his departure himself, as his contract was extended last year to the end of 2024.However, rumours are circulating among the school community that Sampson intends to leave, confusing not only parents who overwhelmingly support his leadership, but also Cranbrook staff, who want Sampson to stay, as do the boys.
Such is North’s toxic approach to governance, Cranbrook was recently notified late last month, via email, of councillorDawes, a Financial Review Rich Lister who was a director of the Cranbrook Foundation and the school’s finance committee, did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure. The rift between Sampson and North pre-dates the co-ed stand-off , although there is likely no headmaster appeasable to North other than one who solely validates his immeasurable self-regard.
