Trevor Jacob admitted removing the wreckage and destroying it so investigators wouldn’t find out the plane hadn’t malfunctioned.
A former Olympian snowboarder-turned YouTube pilot has agreed to plead guilty to purposely crashing his plane as part of a viral advertising stunt and then destroying the wreckage to stymie investigators, federal prosecutors said Thursday.
Trevor Daniel Jacob, 29, admitted he staged the event to make it look like his plane, a Taylorcraft BL-65, had malfunctioned and that he was forced to parachute to safety on Nov. 24, 2021, as the craft crashed into Los Padres National Forest in California Once he arrived over the national forest, about 35 minutes into the flight, Jacob began to curse incessantly as the plane appeared to stall out, according to a video he later posted on YouTube, titled “I Crashed My Airplane.” He then bailed out and parachuted safely to the ground as the plane crashed.
The episode later attracted the attention of the Federal Aviation Administration, which in 2022 revoked Jacob’s pilot license, saying it strongly suspected he had orchestrated the crash.
