A coalition that has been rallying outside San Diego County jails with family members of people who have died in them is pushing for more oversight, more drug screenings and better security.

Leslie Crawford was hurting. The 74-year-old introvert, whose chronic back pain forces her to walk with a cane, didn’t want to be speaking publicly, she told a group of people in front of George Bailey Detention Center on Friday.

‘Long overdue’: Atkins proposes sweeping changes to local jails, citing deaths, lapses in transparency and insufficient oversight The Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Friday that it supports the public’s right to free speech and communities having their voices heard. Despite the changes, advocates and members of the coalition argue that people in custody are running out of time.

As each walked up to the microphone in front of George Bailey, they demanded the Sheriff’s Department investigate how to prevent deaths more in-custody deaths. Many of those deaths were the result of suicides and drug overdoses, and many of the people involved were dealing with mental illness. In some cases, the deaths were the result of homicides.
