The public is being urged to keep an eye out for a female southern right whale in Far South Coast waters that might be entangled in debris.

A volunteer first spotted the mother and her calf off the coast of Tuross Head on Monday afternoon. The mother appeared to be dragging a small orange object in her wake.

ORRCA vice president Jools Farrell is asking whale watchers to keep an eye out for the mother and calf. "When Humpbacks get entangled, a lot of the time it's around their dorsal fin. But southern rights don't have dorsal fins," Ms Farrell said.NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service crews are on standby to disentangle the whale, if they can confirm another sighting and if the weather permits.

"The problem was that sighting was second-hand information. We really need positive evidence such as photos and GPS locations," Ms Farrell said.Boaters are being told to maintain a 500-metre distance from the entangled whale if sighted at sea.
