It has been almost 100 days since the Gell River fire started, burning through more than 35,000 hectares of wilderness — and the job isn't over yet
Almost 100 days after the Gell River fire started in Tasmania's remote south-west, fire crews have been pulled out and rehabilitation work is underway.
The fire burnt through 35,000 hectares of some of the state's most rugged areas, requiring crews to be flown in to tackle the challenging terrain. While the fire is now categorised as 'patrol', meaning there is no active firefighting, hotspots could smoulder until spring. Parks and Wildlife Service fire crew manager John Duggan said interstate crews were sent home on Monday.
"We've had some nice rain over the last week or so on the fireground and that's enabled us to scale back our activities," he said."If need be, we will send more firefighters back out," Mr Duggan said.
