Triple injury blow rocks Aussies as five-wicket hero under cloud for ODI finale

Cricket 2026: Australia vs South Africa third ODI, Nathan Ellis injury, Jack Edwards hamstring, team newsSeptember 29th, 2026 12:17 pm Cricket Australia has confirmed three injury concerns for the Aussies ahead of the third and final ODI against South Africa.

, Nathan Ellis and Joel Davies have been ruled out of the final match, while five-wicket star Jack Edwards is also under an injury cloud. The Australians lost the second ODI by 32 runs, but their problems only grew during the match as the injuries continued to pile up. Ellis was ruled out for the remainder of the South African innings after bowling just four overs. The in-form quick finished with figures of 0/22 after taking three wickets in the opening game of the series. Davies has also been ruled out of the final ODI after picking up a hamstring injury while substitute fielding in game two.

Source: FOX SPORTSEdwards, meanwhile, was one of the stories of the second ODI after taking five wickets to help slow down the South Africans in their massive total of 365. The all-rounder has travelled with the squad on their 90-minute bus trip from Johannesburg to Potchefstroom but remains under an injury cloud ahead of the final match.

It is another setback for Edwards after he also injured his hamstring earlier this year while playing in the Sheffield Shield, before missing the IPL with a broken foot. Australia’s injury list has continued to grow in recent weeks, with Billy Stanlake suffering a side strain against Zimbabwe, while Josh Inglis returned home after breaking his finger in the opening ODI against South Africa.

It leaves the Australians with just 12 fit players to select from for the final ODI as they look to avoid a series whitewash. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are expected to return, unless Australia elect to play Josh Hazlewood for a third straight match. Young gun Ollie Peake is also in the mix for a return to the side after not featuring in the opening two matches of the series following his strong performances against Zimbabwe.

With the series already gone, Australia will now be hoping to avoid any further damage as they look to finish the tour with a win, before heading into the Test series.
