The fifth Ashes Test will not be played in Perth due to Western Australia’s strict COVID-19 border restrictions, Cricket Australia has confirmed.
The Western Australian Government’s stringent COVID-19 border restrictions threw the match into doubt after Premier Mark McGowan refused to budge on allowing players and staff to avoid the 14-day quarantine period upon arriving from Sydney.
Possible replacement venues include Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, while Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has also been an outspoken proponent of moving the Perth Test to Hobart. It comes after an eleventh-hour Hail Mary, the McGowan Government proposed to swap its fifth Test with South Australia’s second, meaning players and officials would be arriving from Brisbane
