Former South Africa allrounder Mike Procter, the country’s first cricket coach of the post-isolation era and a stalwart with English county Gloucestershire, has died aged 77. Procter was a fierce fast bowler and hard-hitting batter who played seven Test matches, his international career stunted by South Africa’s isolation due to apartheid.
He starred in the brilliant Proteas side that famously thrashed Australia 4-0 in the series in South Africa in 1970. Upon South Africa’s return to international cricket in 1991 he led the side as coach, taking them to the semi-finals of the 1992 World Cup in Australia. Procter died this week following complications during surgery. “While in ICU went into cardiac arrest,” his wife Maryna told News24 on Saturday. “He became unconscious and unfortunately never woke up.” Procter followed his playing and coaching careers with a position on the International Cricket Council’s panel of match referees. He was the official in charge when Harbhajan Singh was banned in what became the ‘Monkeygate’ saga during India’s tour of Australia in 2008. Procter also served as South Africa’s convener of selectors. He played 401 first-class games, scoring 21,936 runs at an average of 36.01 with 48 hundreds and 109 fifties. He also took 1417 wickets at an average of 19.53. News of Procter’s death followed the announcement that former Indian captain, and the country’s oldest living Test cricketer, Dattajirao Gaekwad had died aged 95. Gaekwad debuted in 1952 and went on to play 11 Test matches. India wore black armbands in their ongoing Test match against England in his memory. Gaekwad’s son Anshuman Gaekwad followed in his father’s footsteps and played 40 Tests for India between 1974 and 1984. - with 7NEWS
