Could Australia's best cricketers be donning their baggy greens at the LA or Brisbane Olympic Games? One planner thinks so... Read more on this:
A leading Los Angeles 2028 Olympics planner has tipped cricket to be part of the Brisbane Games, an inclusion that would challenge organisers given the sport’s premier venue would be unavailable due to its role as the main athletics stadium.
Cricket has featured at one Olympic Games — Paris 1900 — with Great Britain the reigning champions for almost 123 years. Such a huge fan base, centred mainly on the Asian subcontinent, could present a cash cow for the International Olympic Committee.“As a global sport and Australia’s national summer game, it makes sense for cricket to be in consideration to be part of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” he said.
While Kasprowicz was proud to represent Australia when one-day cricket was included at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, he said the chance to be an Olympian would have been next level.Hanway said cricket’s inclusion would require extreme flexibility from organisers, given the Gabba had already been put forward as the Games’ track and field venue.
“We live in one of the few locations around the world where cricket can be played in winter, so we really have the perfect opportunity to have our game feature in the biggest event on the planet,” he said.
