Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Modern society may sensationalize true crime stories, but in the real world justice is dearly earned and often hard to come by. That's why forensic expert and former CSI Alina Burroughs has dedicated herself to walking audiences through complicated cases in her Investigation Discovery series, Crime Scene Confidential.

I can come into it and ask, “Was this a case where forensic evidence provided this outcome that's controversial?” Maybe there was a wrongful release or a wrongful conviction, but we have forensic evidence that played a key role in that.

And then you also have to put yourself in the role of the suspect. Would the suspect have brought the weapon? What would they have done and touched, and would they have cleaned up? What's in their head? I use empathy as an investigator, and now I use empathy in dealing with family members. Alina Burroughs: A hundred percent. That's where we go wrong, and that's why I'm here to look at the evidence again through the eyes of 2023. I speak about confirmation bias all the time, but we didn’t always have that eye toward things like confirmation bias. That tends to be a newer topic. Everybody holds bias, and the first step in acknowledging bias in an investigation is acknowledging that everybody holds that.

I say this all the time. When you Google somebody who's a victim of homicide, what comes up are the details of their death. And that's not how somebody would want their loved one to be remembered. We want to speak to family and friends because they get to give time to their life. They get to tell us and give context and say, "My dad was always there in the stands when I played softball." Those are the details that we want to hear to remember them as a person.

I think Crime Scene Confidential is the first show that we've seen since the dawn of Forensic Files that shows the reality of what forensic science is from the perspective of a crime scene investigator. We have never had a show that lifts up the crime scene tape and says, "All right, you're going to come along with me. This is how crime scene works." That's the confidential in Crime Scene Confidential; you should feel like you're on a ride along with me.

what have you found, in your own experience as an investigator, to be the most common misconceptions that the public has about forensic findings and the judicial process?
