Queensland Premier Steven Miles and Liberal National Party leader David Crisafulli have made a number of new pledges as they attempt to win over voters ahead of the upcoming state election.

David Crisafulli backs coal power to keep down energy costs as Premier Steven Miles pledges more health funding in latest Queensland election pitches

Mr Crisafulli has been particularly keen to campaign on crime, with his latest pitch on Thursday another measure aimed at addressing issues with the administration of justice in the state. While taking questions from the media, Mr Crisafulli then made another, more impromptu, pledge and revealed he would be open to keeping coal-fired power stations in the state open indefinitely.

"There is no way the vast majority of thinking Queenslanders would want us to shut off baseload power before the capacity of the next generation of energy has been developed." Queensland's Premier has not publicly commented on the impromptu pledge to keep coal plants running, but Mr Miles is likely to highlight the apparent conflict between supporting fossil fuels while also trying to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
