It's been described as an 'evictions crisis'
A Nottinghamshire MP has described an "evictions crisis" facing renters as new figures show the number of no-fault evictions in the county is at its highest level on record. More than 100 no-fault eviction notices were served in Nottinghamshire in the three months to June, with calls for the Government to stop "dragging its feet" on reforms.
Francesca Albanese, the Executive Director of Policy and Social Change at Crisis, said: "These statistics provide further proof that the housing market is on its knees. The number of people being served with an eviction notice has risen once again, reaching its highest level in eight years. Soaring rents and rising costs are piling unsustainable pressures on renters and, sadly, this shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.
Polly Neate, the chief executive of Shelter, said: "With private rents reaching record highs and no-fault evictions continuing to rise, hundreds of families risk being thrown into homelessness every day. Landlords can too easily use and abuse the current system. Although broadly welcoming the proposed end of no-fault evictions when first announced in 2019, Andrew Redfern, the CEO of Nottingham-based homelessness charity Framework, warned that care was needed to avoid "unintended consequences." He wrote at the time that rather than "tinkering" with legislation, the real problem, when it came to homelessness, was a lack of suitable housing.
