Its demise started decades ago, one S.A. chef says.

. Unfortunately, the crispy dog, a hot dog wrapped in a tortilla with cheese and then deep-fried, is now disappearing from menus, Jose Ralat, a journalist with the magazine, wrote on Monday.

The crispy dog remains a popular item on the M.K. Davis menu, Ralat wrote, located at the intersection of North Flores and West Poplar near Cattleman Square. There, it is served as a trio with a side of yellow mustard. Other locations currently serving the crispy dog include Ray's Drive Inn, in Avenida Guadalupe, Burgerteca, in Blue Star, and the food truck Tacos Cucuy."The crispy dog is a taste of a disappearing San Antonio cuisine little known outside its hometown," Ralat wrote.

"They disappeared 30 years ago, you don't see them very often," Hernandez told the Express-News."I don't know who's had them in 20 years. Hot dogs haven't always been a high-quality or high-culinary food item. I think that's one of the reasons why crispy dogs are not appreciated by folks today."
