Parks and wildlife officials shot a crocodile a day after a 38-year-old woman was attacked in far north WA.

A woman is recovering in a Broome hospital after she was bitten by a crocodile in the east Kimberley.About 35,000 freshwater crocodiles live in the man-made lake and feed on fishWildlife authorities have since shot the reptile in Lake Argyle, near Kununurra.

"The behaviour of a crocodile approaching the boat and the events of the previous day is consistent with what staff would identify as a problem animal," the statement reads. Lake Argyle and downstream Lake Kununurra are declared crocodile management zones, which means the department has to take steps to mitigate public risk, even if it means euthanising one of the protected species.

"While not usually considered dangerous animals they have the potential to inflict serious injuries," a department spokesperson said.
