If the Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner has his way, Mungindi may finally become the town where the 'border doesn't exist' and the endless challenges facing locals could be resolved.
The regional town of Mungindi shares its name, services and postcode on both sides of the NSW-Qld border.Residents need dual driver's licences, tradies must hold certificates from both states, and emergencies need to be managed by different state services. Queensland 's Cross-Border Commissioner wants to make it easier for the town to get support as one community.
Tradies must hold certifications from both states, sporting teams navigate different working-with-children checks and funding rules, and even mail delivery is complicated despite the entire town sharing the 2406 postcode. Annette Heagney had to shut down the preschool in its 50th year of operation due to a state funding change.A new facility, partially funded by the community and local councils, is being built on the NSW side of town and is set to open mid-year.
