The cross shape of the $2 million reconstructed pier in Ocean Grove has been controversial with some critics saying it is 'Christian bullying.'

However, under its current complex charter, the association still has authority over the land, beach and boardwalk in Ocean Grove.

The remaining construction costs for the pier are being paid with $1.45 million from the Camp Meeting Association’s financial reserves. The grey material sets the end of the pier apart from the rest of the wood boardwalk and accentuates the cross design. “In prior years, the OGCMA ramped up its efforts to further imprint Ocean Grove with symbols of its religious organization,” the community group alleges on its website.
