An elderly couple in Sydney’s inner west has been potentially saved from bankruptcy and homelessness over a strata debt by a crowdfunding campaign that raised nearly $63,000 | niltiac

crowdfunding campaign and donations have now been turned off at $62,770.

Many donations were from the Earlwood community, including fundraising at the local Coles supermarket, and others were generated by the coverage in“People supported me and my husband, and I will never forget this.”Mission Australia financial counsellor Isis Khalil, who is advising the couple, said the successful fundraiser meant the couple probably no longer needed to sell their home, but she was still working to have the bankruptcy proceedings withdrawn.

The nephew set a fundraising target of $60,000 based on Khalil’s advice about the likely amount required to settle the debt. She was also looking for a solicitor who could advise on the best way to distribute the funds, such as whether a trust account is needed. Strata Community Association president Stephen Brell said the organisation empathised with the Tzavellases but had confirmed with their strata company that the upgrades to the building were necessary works required to maintain the safety and integrity of the building.
