The global CrowdStrike breakdown revealed just how much of the global IT system is built on inherently unsafe code.

The world had its three hours of madness early last Friday evening after a simple code bug hit cities worldwide, sparking a rolling global IT breakdown industry veterans say has been waiting to happen for more than 20 years.

Microsoft grants privileged access to the bare-metal level of its Windows machines to protect against the vulnerabilities inherent in the platform. Apple does not allow third parties into its core operating system, meaning its tightly bound ecosystem is largely free of the blizzard of incursions Microsoft users endure.Microsoft pointed out this week that EU regulations require it to offer core access to competitors. However, as others have observed, the Windows system’s inbuilt vulnerabilities have spurred a gaggle of third-party tools to secure the vast networks that Microsoft powers.
