Comment: Cry for Notre Dame, sure, but why not for treasures beyond the West, too?
Over the past 25 years there have been numerous examples of ancient buildings burning down or being bombed, of cultural treasures being looted or destroyed. But some of these tragedies catch our attention more than others.
How much did we care? Flames engulf the 200-year-old National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro last September.But there was far less media coverage of the Rio inferno than that in Paris, suggesting perhaps that the cultural heritage in the global south is less precious to us. The four-year siege Aleppo, Syria, that ended in 2016, saw serious damage to more than 30,000 buildings in the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, many beyond any hope of repair.Credit:In Palmyra, Islamic State fighters destroyed the Temples of Bel and of Baalshamin, each of which had stood for about 1000 years longer than Notre-Dame, as well as numerous ancient statues and colonnades.
