The Penrith Panthers are set to snub the chance to become the rugby league world champions, causing outrage from fans as a showpiece event faces an uncertain future.
Rugby league fans have taken aim at the Penrith Panthers while the future of an annual showpiece event has been brought into question with the reigning NRL premiers set to snub the chance to become world champions.
They have never won the fixture, losing 21-4 to Wigan in 1991 and to Bradford Bulls 22-4 in 2004, as it remains the one thing missing from the champion team's mantlepiece. Dylan Edwards, Liam Martin, Lindsay Smith and Isaah Yeo will all link up with the Australia squad, James Fisher-Harris, Casey McLean, Scott Sorensen and Trent Toelau are set to play for New Zealand while Soni Luke and Paul Alamoti were both selected for Tonga.
Under the NRL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, players must have an eight-week off-season break, making it tricky to work out a date to play the fixture in a way that avoids player burnout or disrupting their pre-season preparations. “You couldn’t put the players through it. We can’t play it, we don’t have the time span,” Mr Fletcher told News Corp.
