The CSIRO’s latest GenCost 2024-25 consultation draft is facing growing backlash for its apparent failure to provide an objective analysis of Australia’s energy landscape.
CSIRO report criticised by energy expert for 'lack of transparency' after declaring renewables to be cheapest form of energy
Energy Minister Chris Bowen seized on the report to claim nuclear was “not a serious solution” for Australia’s energy challenges. “The CSIRO has once again made unrealistic and unobjective assumptions about coal in order to make integrated renewables look like the cheapest technology,” Ms Hilton said.
“The CSIRO estimates nuclear fuel to be just as cheap as brown coal, so it makes no sense to base nuclear’s capacity factors on currently operating black coal plants.” “The cost of transmission projects continues to rise and it is unclear whether the latest report accounts for these cost blowouts.“This has created a concerning lack of transparency that makes it very difficult to thoroughly check their work.”
