Cuba has uncovered a human trafficking ring that coerced its citizens to fight for Russia in the war in Ukraine, the Caribbean country's foreign ministry says.
Russia is one of Cuba's closest allies and most important financial backers.Russia's defence ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
A network in Russia is trying to recruit Cubans in Cuba and Russia for the war in Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry in Havana said. "Cuba takes a clear stance against mercenarism and actively advocates against this practice at the United Nations," the ministry statement said.
