The future of the historic King’s theatre in Edinburgh is in peril due to the spiralling cost of its renovation project. Anneleen Lindsay has spent the last year documenting the richly atmospheric building – and those who work behind the scenes
Engineer Tom Dutton has worked in the theatre for several years and knows all its nooks and crannies. His job is varied, from restoring the stained glass in the foyer to fixing the water and heating and repairing vandalism. He is pictured in the boiler room basement.
Heather is photographed in one of the grand circle boxes, which is now used to support a lighting rig, rather than as a private spot for the privileged to get uninterrupted views of the stage.Ali is photographed on the roof of the theatre. Over lockdown, Ali was one of the only people regularly in the building, ensuring that it did not fall into further disrepair. As maintenance officer, Ali knows every part of the building.
