The Australian won gold in both the KL2 and VL3 in Tokyo and made a statement of intent to his rivals, bypassing the semifinals and qualifying directly into each final. McGrath was the fastest qualifier in the VL3 at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium with a Games best record of 48.97 seconds.
