Despite having dedicated lanes separated by concrete barriers, cyclists in [location] report feeling vulnerable and in danger due to drivers, taxis, and pedestrians disregarding their designated space.
Despite bike riders having their own lane protected with concrete dividers, many say they're dicing with danger on a daily basis. They've raised issues from drivers pulling out into the bike lane, to taxis stopping in them and even pedestrians treating them as footpaths.\'The bike lanes being separated are great but realistically at the end of the day, you have to as a cyclist pretend that they're not and you're on your own,' one cyclist told 9News.
'There are real safety implications, particularly for some of our more vulnerable road users, and that can include bike riders and pedestrians,' Royal Automobile Club of Victoria mobility general manager Julia Hunter said.\On a shared road, bike riders must give way to drivers who are already turning and indicating left. 'We'd love to see a give-way situation for all bike lanes, like there is across the world, all the time when you're turning left,' Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack said. 'Of course, the consequences of a car hitting a bike rider can be catastrophic, it's quite risky out there if that happens.'\'We are working with the government to talk about consistent road rules as well, so there's not a road rule for one scenario and then another,' McCormack said
