A significant upper air disturbance is approaching the DMV and its associated cold front will traverse our region during the afternoon. Ahead of and along the front, a pulse of deep moisture will spread northward upping the chances for widespread shower activity. While we also expect lightning and thunder, the degree and intensity of stronger to severe thunderstorms may be limited by modest instability.
That being said, there are other factors that may compensate for low levels of buoyant energy. The upper level dynamics are impressive and will coax the air to rise strongly along the front. Wind shear is significant, which means cells that do get going, stand a better chance of developing deeper, stronger and more persistent vertical circulations. The high resolution model guidance develops a robust line of storms.
