“The system is broken… we as parents allow these apps that invite the bullies into homes. You don’t want your kids to be different to their friends and you want them to be able to talk to their friends, but it’s a really fine line.'

The devastated father of a ‘beautiful soul’ who tragically died has spoken of his heartbreak - and called for better mental health support for young people as well as tighter curbs on social media platforms.

“She attended a cognitive behavioural therapy counselling course to learn some coping mechanisms; she responded well to this and seemed happy. This was just before her 18th birthday and she seemed fine: she had a new group of friends, she had a part time job in a bar, she was planning to go to uni to study business in Manchester and she had a driving test booked for September.

He said: “I work in software; and can see the benefits of a 'connected solution' with a lack of follow up or communication between social services, hospitals, doctors and schools; I can only assume that no such connected solution exists. We absolutely need these solutions so that we can better support young people.

“We are compelled as a family to raise awareness for youth mental health and are supporting the charity ‘Young Minds’ in Macie's name.” In a statement on social media, David said: “It is with a very heavy heart and feeling of complete emptiness that I inform you of the tragic death of my daughter Macie Vella who sadly took her own life on 26th July 2022 - she was just 18 years old .

“We are committed to ensuring children and young people struggling with mental health problems receive the treatment they need. We are increasing investment into mental health services by at least over £2 billion a year by 2024 and we have rolled out 287 mental health support teams covering thousands of schools and colleges across the country.”

A ‘Celebration of Life ‘ for Macie will take place on Friday, August 19, at St Paul’s Church in Skelmersdale at 13:45pm, followed by a service at West Lancashire Crematorium, for which the dress code will be black with a splash of purple, which was Macie’s favourite colour. There will be an opportunity for family, friends and those who were close to Macie to ‘share stories, photos, and a few laughs and tears’ at Hurlston Hall Country Club in Scarisbrick, near Ormskirk, from 3:30pm onwards.
