Dad will spend Christmas Day in his car and is sleeping upright in vehicle
Shane Blackwell will be spending Christmas alone in his car after the breakdown of his relationship left him with nowhere to go. A former chef, he has been living in his car for the past 10 weeks in the freezing weather. He now says he does not know where to go from here.
Shane, who is originally from London but is now located in the West Midlands, suffers with PTSD and had to give up work. He also has very few connections in the area and so found himself living in his car. He also says he doesn't want to be a burden on people having to put him up over Christmas and finds it difficult to accept help.He can't lie down in his small car but somehow he continues to make it through each night. "It's a bit horrible.
"I'm still okay, I'm not ill which is surprising. I've kept the car running as much as possible but I don't know how much longer I can do it. I'm gonna be there on Christmas, there's no choice about it. Shane isn't sure what's next for him, but he is hopeful something will change soon. Thankfully, he's been getting help from Salma Food Bank in Smethwick so he at least has something to eat. "I'm speaking to the council, trying to get some benefits.
