Mark Beechum, 28, told police he strangled his father, Leamon Beechum III, at the home they lived in, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.
A little after 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27, Dallas police officers responded to a grocery store the 3200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, police said. A third-party 911 caller said the suspect — Mark Beechum — admitted to killing a relative and wanted to turn himself in.As those officers took him into custody, others responded to the 500 block of West Saner Avenue, where they found 75-year-old Leamon Beechum III on the floor of his home, police said.
The arguments typically revolved around his father’s car, police wrote. Two days prior to the slaying, Beechum told police, they had a dispute about the car and the next day he purchased a pistol for protection against his father, the affidavit said. On Wednesday, Beechum and his father had another argument, where his father said he didn’t want him to use his car anymore, the affidavit said. Beechum said he was walking away when his father asked, “Do you want to die?”
He saw his father reach for a kitchen knife on the bed, so he grabbed his hand and pried it open, taking the knife away, police wrote in an affidavit. Then, Beechum told police, he threw the knife out of his father’s reach and wrestled him to the ground.At this point, he recalled to police, he no longer felt threatened and felt only anger for his father then began to choke him until he stopped moving, the affidavit said.
