Dallas must redouble efforts to make Deep Ellum safer | Opinion
The increased police presence is readily seen as people check out the various Deep Ellum nightlife in Dallas, TX, on May 20, 2022. The recent announcement that the Deep Ellum Arts Festival will not return to the neighborhood after 28 years makes a bad year for Deep Ellum even worse.
Deep Ellum, a music hub since the 1920s, has had its ups and downs over the years. The Great Recession left it battered, causing many bars to close. But the district has experienced another renaissance, now brimming with trendy restaurants and coffee shops alongside bars and concert venues. There have been more than a dozen shooting victims in Deep Ellum since September 2021. Last fall, Dallas Police Chief Eddie García vowed to “take Deep Ellum back.” Now the neighborhood will get its own dedicated unit, with hopes that rooting police officers in the district will yield better results.
