While city departments are still working through the impacts of a May 3 ransomware attack, the FBI in Dallas says a criminal investigation into the breach that has hampered municipal operations for weeks is ongoing.
City officials have been mostly non-responsive on sharing specific details on the attack, though Dallas City Council has met in at least three closed session meetings with information technology officials in the past two weeks to discuss the city’s network security and other issues related to the incident.
Jim McDade, president of the Dallas Fire Fighters Association, said the fire department was delayed to several calls while the CAD system was being restored, but servers being down also impacted data collected during emergency calls.The Dallas Morning NewsHe said he is concerned that the department may never know if any calls were inadvertently missed or properly responded to.
“I think a big fear also is that even though we can get everything back up and running again, what was compromised on the city side as far as our personal information?” McDade said. “Right now, they’re rebuilding everything, but the big question is still what was the purpose of the ransomware and what actually happened because of it.”
Ransomware is often used to extort money from organizations by threatening to block access to files or release confidential information unless money is paid. City officials have declined to say whether the city has been issued any ransom.
