The Stars finished among the worst in the NHL with an 8-14 regular-season overtime record and a 1-4 overtime record in the playoffs. They were 4-3 when the game went to shootouts.Pete DeBoer said throughout the playoffs and the offseason that overtime would be one of the focuses of improvement for the team early this season.The Stars beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 in a season-opening shootout at the American Airlines Center.
Wyatt Johnston set up the first scoring opportunity with a centering pass in front of Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington. Miro Heiskanen had a one-on-one look against Binnington as well. Robertson had the third good look of overtime, which drew a penalty for hooking with 42 seconds remaining.Dallas outplayed St. Louis for much of regulation as well, but again struggled to convert on its opportunities.
