The New York Times endorsement is an unexpected coup for congressional candidate Dan Goldman, who’s never held elected office but became widely known after serving as the lead lawyer for House Democrats during Donald Trump's first impeachment hearing.

Others focused on the fact that the endorsement did not mention Goldman’s two female challengers, Rivera and Niou, who happen to represent portions of the new district on the city and state level.

Charlie Stadlander, a spokesperson for the Times, defended the editorial board’s endorsement process. The newspaper publishes full transcripts of candidate interviews on its website. During a joint news conference outside City Hall on Monday, the two focused their attacks on Goldman’s wealth and positions on issues such as healthcare and expanding the Supreme Court. Goldman has said he supports allowing more people to buy into a federal health plan, also known as a public option, but he does not support "Medicare for All," which would replace most private insurers. He is also the only candidate who opposes expanding the U.S.
