Educators across primary and secondary schools are reporting an increase in the number of young people taking part in harmful schoolyard eating habits, such as throwing away food or diet clubs, according to the Butterfly Foundation. “Children should never be on a diet. For somebody who’s vulnerable, it can really fuel that problematic comparison tendencies and competitiveness.”When concern turns obsessive
“My main worry is that a healthy concern turns obsessive and then impacts their self-esteem and their eating behaviours,” she said. “When has voiced concern over her weight, we have made it clear that she has a beautiful and healthy, strong body and that it’s perfect the way it is. “We’re all living in this kind of image-obsessed world ... so as parents, we maybe need to do some learning and unlearning when it comes to some of the ideas we have necessarily around food and weight,” she said.As for schools, creating a zero-tolerance approach to food shaming is an important first step.“It’s important to eat for what’s right for you and your body.”
