The Victorian government will stop work on its $10 billion Melbourne Airport Rail project amid a federal government review of infrastructure projects.

After weeks of speculation about the future of the Airport Rail project, the Victorian government confirmed on Wednesday that work will be paused “to ensure certainty for workers during this time, they may be temporarily redeployed to other big build sites” although fears of job losses remain high.

The official announcement comes two weeks after federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the review “doesn’t include the Airport Rail ... the money will remain in the budget for that particular project.” Wednesday’s announcement and Mr Andrews comments last week make clear that total federal funding assigned to Victoria will remain the same, meaning that funding could potentially be switched to the $125 billion Suburban Rail Loop, which has been excluded from the federal review.

Former Victorian premier calls for government to reinstate mandatory national serviceFormer Victorian premier calls for government to reinstate mandatory national serviceFormer Victorian premier Jeff Kennett is calling for the federal government to reinstate a new kind of national service that would have young Australians serve their community for a couple of years. “Why do I favour it? Because I think society today is lacking any sort of unifying point,” Mr Kennett told Sky News host Chris Kenny. “Every male and female, say the age of 20, is called up for one or two years, they have a choice of going into any of the military arms … but they also have the opportunity of joining a first responder group.”
