The Nationals have challenged the Victorian Premier to “front up” over the Commonwealth Games axing later this month, making it the third probe the state government faces into the cancellation.
The Senate Committee has invited Mr Andrews, former Victoria Minister for Commonwealth Games Delivery Jacinta Allan and former Commonwealth Games Legacy Minister Harriet Shing to appear at hearings scheduled in Melbourne or Bendigo.
Opposition Infrastructure spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie challenged Mr Andrews to take up the “opportunity to explain” the cancellation as she criticised his lack of “transparency”. "This is an opportunity for the Premier to explain to all Australians, why he took the decision he did and what evidence he based that on," she told Sky News Australia on Thursday.
Ms McKenzie repeatedly highlighted that no evidence had been provided to indicate that Mr Andrews hadn't just"made up" the budget blow out from $2.6 billion to $7 billion.
