Inner West Labor Mayor Darcy Byrne says there is “red-hot” anger over new bail laws.

Influential Labor Mayor Darcy Byrne will convene an emergency meeting of Aboriginal, legal and human rights organisations to push for the state government to repeal its new bail laws for children.

Inner West Council mayor and powerful Labor figure Darcy Byrne at a Yes23 campaign event in October last year.However, the move has bitterly divided the Labor Party, including Premier Chris Minns’ own MPs. On Thursday upper house Labor MP Cameron Murphy said he had “personal objections” to the bill but was bound by caucus rules to support it.

“There is red-hot anger in the community about the way these draconian laws have been rammed through the parliament,” Byrne said.
