The South Australian Opposition is calling for the state’s child protection minister to be sacked and a dedicated portfolio to be established following “harrowing” data on offences committed against children in state care. A total of 49 people were charged with sexual offences against children in state care between March 2022 and May 2024, one of them a government staff member. Two girls in state care reported pregnancies following alleged offences.
“It’s distressing and unacceptable that children are becoming victims to sexual predators when their level of protection should be higher because they are in state care.” Opposition Child Protection assistant spokesperson Laura Henderson said it was “untenable” for Hildyard to juggle multiple portfolios. “Katrine Hildyard must do the right thing and resign. If not, Peter Malinauskas must step up and sack her before appointing a new standalone Child Protection Minister,” Henderson said.
